international swiss design

With all the devices handcrafted in Bern, Switzerland, the in-house production team prides itself on meticulous attention to detail. Once built, each unit undergoes an extensive measurement routine before leaving the workshop and taking residence in living rooms, bars, and clubs all over the world. A detail of the Eames House (also known as Case Study House No. 8), built in 1949, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, © Eames Office, LLC (eamesoffice.com). Design always remained the centre of their lives, with working days running from 9am to 10pm and a full-time cook on hand so they needn't leave the studio to eat. After Charles' death in 1978, Ray worked hard to complete any unfinished projects but, having done so, did not seek new ones beyond her two remarkable books.

International Typographic Style is a minimalist design style that emphasizes simplicity, objectivity, and readability. Designs are set asymmetrically within a grid to present content in a formalized way. The “typographic” descriptor reflects the style’s use of left-aligned sans-serif typefaces that were typically paired with photographic images, abstract graphics, and modest but bold color palettes. Swiss Design, also known as the International Typographic Style, is a graphic design approach developed in Switzerland in the 1950s that emphasizes cleanliness, readability, and objectivity. Characterized by sans-serif typefaces, grids, and asymmetrical layouts, it focuses on simplicity and functionality in design. The 1960s also saw the rapid decline of hand- and machine-set metal type as they were replaced by display-and-keyboard phototype systems.

Characteristics of style

Presenting three products as part of the exhibition, each piece represents one of three outdoor furniture collections with a core focus on the joy felt from being outside. Utilizing the language of design to cross geographical borders and connect cultures, the Swiss-German duo collaborates with companies from Italy and Denmark that have a strong and established design heritage. Developed with flexibility in mind, the Factor Light has a rotatable core that can be positioned to provide 360° of infinite movement, enabling users to create an environment personalized to their needs. Crafted from extruded aluminium, with an integrated LED bulb, the lamp can be used alone or grouped alongside others by implementing bridge connectors. Echoing the design approach behind the Factor Light, the DB20 ceramic tableware collection plays with light and shadow through two- and three-dimensional patterns. Glazed on the inside, the seven pieces have a raw exterior finish, giving them a softer tactility.

Another trend is the integration of environmental and social responsibility into design, with designers seeking to create designs that are sustainable and socially conscious. Swiss design has had a significant impact on the visual language of the European Union, with its clean lines and minimalist aesthetic becoming a defining characteristic of Western design. Many prominent EU brands and organizations have embraced Swiss design principles in their branding and communications, recognizing the power of its clear and concise messaging. Jan Tschichold became a leading advocate of modernist design after visiting the Wiemar Bauhaus exhibition in 1923.

exploring the nuances of joy and its connection to design

Despite these new trends, the principles of Swiss design will continue to be a guiding force in the world of design, shaping the way we communicate visually and providing a foundation for future innovations. Wilsonminer is the home of Wilson Miner, designer and co-founder at EveryBlock. Miner worked on the first major redesign of Apple and designed the identity (and the admin interface) of the Django web framework. The great visual impact of this site are the big photographs that stand from the background.

White Space

After World War II, designers in Switzerland and Germany codified Modernist graphic design into a cohesive movement called Swiss Design, or the International Typographic Style. These designers sought a neutral and objective approach that emphasized rational planning and de-emphasized the subjective, or individual, expression. They constructed modular grids of horizontal and vertical lines and used them as a structure to regularize and align the elements in their designs. These designers preferred photography (another technical advance that drove the development of graphic design) as a source for imagery because of its machine-made precision and its ability to make an unbiased record of the subject.

“It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO. For her Foyer of Enchantment, Scheff installed a custom mural by Hattas Art Studios, a John Richard chandelier dripping with glass leaves, a silk wall covering by Aux Abris, and organic furniture created with Amorph Studio. “I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says. Transforming discarded climbing ropes into handwoven rugs, this project is the embodiment of joy through the act of repurposing and giving new life to such materials. Resulting in functional and decorative pieces, they add a vibrant ambiance to interior spaces while telling a story of resilience and adventure by evoking memories of past climbing experiences.

In this article, we showed you what Swiss Style is, the characteristics of the movement, famous designers, and why the International Typographic Style is still relevant to this day. It features a beautiful and attractive yellow color, big type treatment, and organized layouts. The inside pages of the template allow you to show pictures as big as possible, perfect for an art catalog.

How the Swiss Style Relates to the Web

The contrast looks very beautiful and shows that there are use cases for both serif and sans-serif typefaces. Along with that, there’s a significant amount of whitespace that greatly leverages readability. Adrian Frutiger is the master typeface designer behind the Univers, Frutiger and Avenir typefaces, just to mention a few. He studied calligraphy at the Zürich Kunstgewerbeschule, which along with his interest in sculpture helped shape his style as a typeface designer.

Detail of House of Cards, designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1986, Design Museum. Detail of La Chaise, designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1948, Design Museum. As I mentioned last week, flat design is a new foundation, but what are we going to add on top of the foundation? I want to think about how the web differs from print and what those differences suggest for what we’ll build on the new foundation of flat design.

As the design world continues to evolve, new innovations and trends are emerging that build upon the principles of Swiss design while pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Max Bill was an architect, painter, typographer, industrial and graphic designer. He studied at the Bauhaus until late 1920’s when he moved to Zurich where he became a teacher and prime member of the Allianz group of graphic designers. There are also similar articles discussing visual hierarchy, graphic design movements, Bauhaus graphic design, and Brutalist graphic design. This move turned designers’ attention to the possibilities of single typefaces in a completely new way.

Menu for Schaefer's Canal House in Chesapeake City, MD

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

Very helpful tie up assistance. Tom was expert on getting us secured in swift currents. On site restaurant very convenient. Convenient spot to stop with a restaurant at your door.

Wheelchair accessible elevator,

No showers, laundry or grocery nearby. Schaefer's Canal House is a hidden gem along the Northern Shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Located in Chesapeake City, MD, the deep-water marina is nestled on Back Creek, which branches off of the Elk River.

The onsite restaurant was very good. Live music was enjoyable without being too loud. Enjoyed our dinner so much we decided to go back for Sunday brunch. We are docked from May1st to Oct31st on the transit floating docks. Our vessel is definately in good hands with Dockmaster Tom & Manager Steven Connell.

Late-night food,

My only complaint has nothing to do with the marina. The restaurant has gone downhill. My guess is they have a new chef. It was prime rib ordered medium rare and arrived medium well. Then got chicken parmigiana.

For Boaters

Also a great walking and bike path if you're looking for a place to stretch your legs. A very convenient stop along the way. The person that helped us dock was excellent! Tied up quickly and securely.

LGBTQ+ friendly,

Schaffer's is a desirable destination, not just a great marina and restaurant. Beautiful view of a competitor across the Canal, too. Free docks on opposite shore were silted in. One is exposed to canal but very little canal traffic. Tied-up just east of bridge but never noticed bridge noise above our heater-fans noise.

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

Easy access to water hose and electric hookup. The only draw-back is that there are no showers. Even a cold water outside rinse off shower would have been nice. Nice folks running the docks (inc their staff). However not a marina - mainly dockage for restaurant & bar (which we found convenient). Therefore, no dock restrooms or showers (bathrooms at restaurant).

There are currently no photos.

Dealing with the currents in the canal and the huge concrete Chesapeake City Bridge support in the middle of the dock can be quite a challenge. And many a loud speed boat takes advantage of the good fuel prices here. But the people are friendly and the area peaceful, with the restaurant offering decent food and beverage options. Overall a nice one night stop.

A 2-3 knot current with an easy approach. Dock hands are very helpful. We overnighted on the face dock which are fixed-3 foot tide. Good basic marina with a really good restaurant. If you are picky the noise from vehicles on the bridge might bother you. I had a cold beer and thought of the sounds as a funky reggae beat.

No stores of any kind nearby, although Steve offered to have staff give us a ride to a grocery store. The dock hands were excellent. Got tied up quickly and efficiently in the current.

Very helpful & professional, well versed in the challenges of their current. Excellent hours for transients if trying to stretch your day. Nice casual restaurant on site.

The marina does offer restrooms, but a bath house is not an available amenity. This is a good location to stop in preparation to head down the C&D canal, and Delaware River. I believe this is the only marina in Chesapeake City that has fuel.

We never encountered such a helpful friendly and funny dockside assistance Restaurant was very good along with the staff. And fun watching all the canal traffic. Definitely would come back. We had a really good experience here. The staff was super friendly and helpful and really went out of their way for us. The restaurant was great and you are a short dinghy ride to town on the other side of the canal.

The docks and power were very new and more than adequate. Steve and his team provide an excellent experience. The location is great and we got to see the swapping of pilots on a vehicle carrier ship right from our boat. Good spot for waiting on the current and getting a great meal at the restaurant. Dock hands were great and very helpful.

Always awkward if seen as a complainer. The owner and his son were polite and the facility was a perfect stopover. Very good prices at the dock and restaurant. On our way from Cape May to Baltimore.

Schaefer's Canal House Chesapeake City, Maryland Chesapeake Bay Marina

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

Again, great docking support. The restaurant had a live band and the food was excellent. Very pleasant stay and great stop between Cape May and Annapolis. Nice stop between the Cheasapeake and Cape May. In the past, we have stopped at Delaware City but this is more convenient. We were docked at a long fixed dock alongside the canal and the restaurant.

For Boaters

Great stay at Schaefer's marina. Stopped at the fuel dock and took on 750 gallons of fuel. Dual pumps made fueling easy and fast. Nice discount for large quantity of fuel. Great line handling from the dock hands. Moved tp the bulkhead for the overnight stay.

Comfort food,

Much enjoyed the large bar/restaurant - good food and service. This is a restaurant with a dock that accepts transients, not a true marina. Note that they have fuel (gas and diesel), but no other amenities for transients (no pump-out/showers/laundry/after-hours toilets etc.). Those would be welcome additions that could lead to longer stays.

Wheelchair accessible parking lot,

Current and pilings made for a rough night. The restaurant was lively and the food was good. As to the accommodations there is a substantial amount of current through the marina and the tidal change is roughly 3’. With the marina only offering pilings that makes it tough to position bumpers for cushioning as the shifting current bounces the boat around.

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

Filled with a wide variety of seafood specialties and casual bites, there is a taste here that will please any pallet. The restaurant does have special menus for holidays, as well as an amazing event space, perfect for hosting your next big shindig. The beautiful veranda that overlooks the creek gives guests a quiet spot to catch up on some serious R&R.

Steven the Dock Master was amazing. He's very knowledgeable and even washed the water marks and filled our fenders when we got fuel. Passed out leaflets with all kind of info. And cracking jokes the whole time.

Marina staff is very knowledgeable on currents and did a great job of securing the boat for an overnight stay. Will be using the Marina on my return trip. After a long run up the Chesapeake with foul current all day, we arrived at sunset. Steve stayed late to handle our lines for us and could not have been more helpful. The long face dock makes for a convenient stop when transiting the canal. Good dinner at the restaurant.

Menu for Schaefer's Canal House in Chesapeake City, MD

Liked it so much we stayed a second night. Quaint town and very nice restaurant. Please note fuel dock is being renovating and will not be available until May. Schaefer's Canal House menu has been digitised by Sirved.

Happy hour drinks,

Staff was excellent from the time I hit the Fuel dock, until I was down the pier at my slip. Dockhands were knowledgeable and knew how to secure boat to fixed pier. Fun being on the edge of the restaurant and people eating who wanted to be more informed about boats. Great experience on the C and D canal. The staff was incredibly helpful when docking and getting advice on transiting the canal and out the the Delaware Bay. The restaurant is very good and the area is clean and well maintained.

Very friendly and competent Dock Master, Steve, guided us right into fuel dock and then around to out spot on the bulkhead. Despite passing ships, there was very little rocking from wakes. Restaurant was good and steps from the boat. This is a really nice joint. Good food & drink, with easy access. We docked right along-side parallel to the canal.

There are no shower facilities and the bathrooms are serviceable. If you have tried the above and still do not see availability, the marina may be full for your dates or unable to accommodate your vessel size. Use our search bar to find nearby marinas or private listings.

Great help from Dockmaster and dockhand. The Army Corp had actually closed the C&D Canal due to fog. I contacted the Dockmaster and he called me when the Canal was open to traffic.

Great food at the restaurant. Tom the Dockmaster was very friendly and helpful. He guided us in to our spot over the radio and took our lines on arrival. Lively place with live music over the weekend. Nice location and great staff. The restaurant was good and reasonably priced.

The facility has undergone some fantastic rehabilitations to both the dock area as well as the main house. Boaters are able to dock at either the fixed dock when booking with shore power, or the floating docks if power is not needed. The marina offers 30amp and 50amp shore power.

Wakes from passing boats were not bad even on a weekend. A little noisier than most places due to the bridge traffic and the restaurant but not bad. Good and pleasant dock help (Olivia).

Nice for a quick stop especially with the shoaling at the entrance to the Anchorage across the canal. Marina Staff are great but tug and barge traffic very challenging. A little crazy on a holiday but the staff is great and works hard. We will definitely add Schaefer's to our 'must return' list. Yes, Schaefer's Canal House has a kids menu, view their kids menu on Sirved.
